  1. Jose Alberto Esposito says:

What does the title mean? How does the title and the contrast within it provide symbolic summary of the film?

The title Means like two different words that don`t means anything together because slum mean like poor people and millionaire like a very rick people.

The title and the contrast in this movie means how a poor man pass to be rich with a simple TV program, Slum means like a very poor zone and is like a young population that don`t have a lot of money, so I think that went the title talk about slum is about Jamal, how with a simple TV program “How wants to be a millionaire” and in one night or one day he turn to be a millionaire.

    Jose Alberto Esposito.

  2. Eduardo Yep says:

Salim Malik makes the decision of filled up the bathtub with all Javed money, because he want a redemption because from the beginning of his life, he always wanted to be rich, and at the end, he want to know that he was going to die, like he always want, rich.

And Salim make that decision, because for one time on his life, he want to make something good saving Latika from Javed, and giving his brother Jamal, the life he deserves with Latika, as he always want since he was a child and he abandoned with Maman on the camp.

  3. So the first question states the following “What does the title mean? How does the title and the
contrasts within it provide symbolic summary of the film?”
So, what does the tittle means? the tittle, as already you should know, it´s “Slumdog millionaire”, now there are two opposite terms that discribe two different persons, life styles, etc. However, theyre both united on a single phrase, which ensures that it´s the same person we are talking about.
Essencially, we are talking about a Slumdog, a little boy from the streets, non educated and without a clue about what is basic culture. So how does a Slum dog becomes a millionaire? by luck, should be your go to guess in most cases. The word “millionaire” gives us a clue, which is the real life show “Who want´s to be a Millionaire?”, by doing some crytichal thinking, we can predict that a poor guy will attemp to become a millionaire by entering the show and make his best guess, by the way, there´s no denying it´s controversial apealing.
So, how can we make our predictions of the summmary of the film? based on movies natural plot making, we can asume he will have many troubles on the way.

  4. Alonso says:

The Movie is saying that the program Who wants to be a Millionaire? represents a hope, a chance to escape from their reality, if you became Millionarie ¿why you wanna stay on the Slum? It´s your ticket off the reality.
But also represents some type of brainwashing or mental control because it makes people stop think on their reality and just watch crap on Television. It´s a calculated and cold form of fake or improbable hope and also attracts the masses considering in Bombay lived 18 million people.

  5. Rodrigo Arnillas says:

Salim filed up the bathtub with money because he always wants to have money, Salim help Latika even he knows that Javed would kill him, so he decided to filed up the bathtub with all that money so he can die rich like he always wants. He also takes that decision for do something good in his life for redeem his self and help his brother because he knows that his brother never give up

  6. Gabriel Loor says:

What does the title mean? How does the title and the contrast within it provide symbolic summary of the film?

    – I think that the title in a simple way means that several opportunities are presented to a poor boy with no future and these changes his life and change him, making him a better person and rich.
In his life he crossed many difficulties, like: He loses his mother (unique family without his brother), his brother don´t have a good moral rationality, etc.
In this period he meet a woman that with more time spending with her, more he love her.

1° reason why he turns millionaire:

He constructed a very good friendship relationship with Latika in regardless his situation and he knows that one person more in the group is one more mouth to feed. By the time pass, that friendship turns to strong loop of love.

2° reason why he turns millionaire:

In the show Who wants to be a millionaire, all the questions they asked him, were important moments in his life, but he didn´t have the last answer of the the last question: “who is the third musketeer”, he used his last lifeline in calling his brother, but Latika answered the call. When Jamal heard her voice he asked her if she is safe and Latika says yes, in that moment he didn´t care about the money or the show so he answered any option and coincidently that was the right one.

  7. In question number 3 it says:
In the film, the theme of destiny is a central theme. What does it mean that all Jamal desires is just out of his reach?.
During the film we see that they say that a lot of things are already written, and of course Jamal Malik is Just a “Chai wallah”. why is this a relevant fact in the movie? it`s simple to answer that, if someone is born poor he`ll be always poor and that there is no way to change that. But The case of Jamal malik is different, his poorness turned him rich. Jamal teaches something really important, nothing it`s written and we are the ones that create our own future. As Latika said in the movie, This progamme (Who wants to be a millionaire) is popular because is a way out of their actual life.
Despite all the poor people in India and Perú we can make sure that everything can change, a lot of people started from being just one simple Slum. nothing was out of “His Reach”, but they felt like if the were limited to some things beacuse of marginalization.
For example:Dhirubhai Ambani is an indian person responsible of one of the biggest fortunes in the world. in simple words
“His life has often been referred to as a true “rags to riches” story.” Wikipedia.org
That´s why this movie is a kind of fight against destiny, as we watched in the movie.

In Peru, there is a predominance of poor and minority population where wealth is concentrated, causing a marked social polarity. That also is seen in the movie, this causes corruption, indifference, physical abuse, social impairment. This leads to generation with unemployment, lack of resources, malnutrition, crime, health problems, illiteracy, etc … In many families the children have to work instead of studying and living his childhood, but unfortunately can not give that “luxury “because they need to work to help the family to eat.
I think we should make political institutions, promote social and economic sustainable development to ensure the basic rights of every Peruvian, we must build a political system that encourages citizen participation, who cares about the vast majority who do not own anything, but are part of this country and deserve better opportunities. We need to promote decentralized and responsible development of our territory, innovation and long-term investments.
Everything must be aimed at improving the quality of life, to try to reduce malnutrition in children, to seek incentives to improve their income.
We must summon the participation of private enterprise and of society because no one can remain indifferent, we need to have more people aware, to see the reality of our country, that should carry us to realize that there are some issues that if it can not be solved, if you can be creating a mindset that we are all responsible for keeping many people continue to live in subhuman conditions, so it is necessary to create a culture of conscience, only so we will have a better country with better opportunities for all, the poor are stigmatized, and should not be so.

Because here in Peru we have a commercial product equivalent to Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? and is called La Tinka. Odds of winning this lottery are almost zero but just as are excited this way, people with the remote possibility of winning. This is a dirty game and mental emotional psychological which keep people in a state of painful illusion.

Nightmare in the movie: In the movie yes it present because like Lima and Mumbai the city is very poor, there are slums, child traffic, etc.

Impossible Dream: The impossible dream in the movie is it for Jamal, the man who plays who wants to be a millionaire? And don’t imagine that he will won 20 million rupees. Before he is very poor and he don’t imagine that he would have 20 million rupees, for his is a dream.

For me the most important message or impression from the movie is that you never give up, we can see that in the film in the climax, when Jamal won 20 million rupees, he don’t imagine that and he don’t give up In the game, when the tv host question to Jamal if he want to pass to next question he say yes, already is he don’t know the question.

In the final scene, we see Salim and the choice he makes – filling the bathtub with money, etc. Why does he make this choice?
Salim did that because after all that he passed he didnt get hapiness and also he was upset of having mistrated his brother Jamal and her friend (girlfrien) Latika. By doing that he made his brother and his girlfriend happy, kills the chief of the group of the mafi9a and get realised from his chains (of doing bad).

In Peru, Lima there are many slums and also bad people who have many money from there as in India, but the difference between Lima and Mumbai is that here there are not so many “mafias” as there are in Mumbai and also here theres not a LEGAL discrimination between poor and rich.

what does the title mean? How does the title and the contrast within it provide symbolic summary of the film?

I believe there is a relation between the title and the movie, because the title is “SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE” and it deals with the surprise somone gets when he sees that a slumdug has become a millionaire. This is caused by prejudice, people can’t believe that an uneducated young boy from the slums could be able to win a knowledge contest. In the movie this is shown when the police officers are torturating Jamal because they say he cheated, and they would’nt believe when he said he didn’t. The hoster is also a cause of this problem, because he is very hostile with Jamal at first, he ca´nt believe what is happening, he keeps insulting him and telling him he’ll lose, etc.

We can see this in Lima, because the people is so prejudiced that they discriminate other people. They won’t hire people if they come from the mountains, they actually think, these people are ignorant. But no. One of the most rich persons in lima, is the “king of potatoes”, and he comes from there. some people can’t accept this fact, and state his money earned illegaly.

As I said before, this title deals with predujice and discrimination tto people from the slums, and how they make their money.

  13. The first question says, what does the title mean? How does the title and the contrasts within it provide symbolic summary of the film? Well, first of all, the causes of slums in many principal cities of the world is that people come to the cities for more chances of getting a better live, but when they come, many of the places for living they can’t afford them . So then they need to live in poor houses, slums. Comparing Lima slums to Indian slums, both of them are very similar. The principal similarity of them is the people. Many of them are very poor and only a little of them want change their lifestyle and effort to do that. So the solution to this problem is to have willpower for the change. Answering to the first question, the title refers to change. Being a slum dog is being in one of the lowest social classes in the caste system. And a millionaire is someone who has a lot of money. Both of them don’t fit but in the movie they do. Jamal changed his live. In the movie, Jamal change in the good way, doing hard work. Instead his brother did the same, but in the bad way, being in the mafia. In conclusion, we can say that slums are caused by the lack of willpower of people who lives in them and that the only solution to this is the effort.

1st question. What does the title mean? How does the title and the
contrasts within it provide symbolic summary of the film?

The title is “Slumdog Millionaire”, in this title there are two opposite terms, and they describe to really different lifestyles. But beacause this two words are joined in the same phrase, one may suppose that it’s only one person that we’re talking about. So the title is how a poor person (slumdog) becomes a millionaire one and change his entire life.
He was given the opportunity to play “Who wants to be a millionaire? and he only played because he thought Latika (his true love) would see it and he could find her. So it’s a poor boy from the streets that enters the game and makes his best guess. But he was a slumdog, how did he won the game? A question that I can answer.
During his entire life, Jamal Malik crossed through many difficulties but he could get through them and find a high live condition.
In Who wants to be a millionaire? Jamal is asked to answer questions that he wouldn’t know if he didn’t live that rough and difficult life. Every single question was a important moment of Jamal’s life, that’s why he could answer every question. But he didn’t mind about the money he was about to win, he only wanted to find Latika and when that happen be with her and demonstrate the love that he feels.
The title plot gives us the clue to find that as a slumdog he will have a lot of problems during the programme.

What does the title mean? How does the title and the contrasts within it provide symbolic summary of the film?
The title means that a slum person changes his poor live to a rich life. It can also mean that everyone can change whatever they want. In the movie Jamal was a slum person but when he started to play “Who wants to be a millionaire” and he won he change his life, he started to play because Jamal wanted that Latika take a look at him.
In Lima, most the people who live in a slum thing that all their lives they going to be poor, but if they work hard they can change his live. In Mumbai in the same thing, people who live in slums think that all their live, they will be poor.

  16. Gabriel Rey says:

Compare and contrast three pivotal choices or decisions made by Jamal and Salim. How do their choices affect their respective paths in life or “destinies”?

The decision of both affect in their destiny. Each one of them took a decision. One took the choice to live freedom in the way of vices, crime, delincuency, the wrong way. Instead, Jamal chose the way of honesty and hard work. This is clearly shown in the story. The way Salim decides to go with Javed after escaping from Maman. With that decision, he chose to work for him in shady dealings and work involved with crime. And the way Jamal continues his life honestly and working to survive. Also, their decisions of liberty take them to their final destiny. Salim discovered that the way of vices and wrong liberty takes you to the wrong ending, but he discovered it too late. Jamal, instead, discovered that the way he took (the right way) many times, takes you to a final happy ending. This is one of the purposes of the movie. Show that soon or late, hardworking gives you a reward and vices just finishes with your life. And also, show the viewer these two choices of freedom through two slumdog brothers.
Here in Peru, the same thing occurs in slums. Boys and girls are abandoned everyday by their parents when they are very little. They grow up and start to make decisions. And as Salim and Jamal, some ones take the wrong way and others take the right one. And their final destination is the same as the brothers from the movie. And in a way, this is good because guys like Jamal take the right decisions and they become important (in many cases) for the country. But the problem is that most of them, act like Salim because it is the easiest way and also because getting into drugs and vices (for them) is the “perfect” way to go through the trauma they have from the left of their parents which is the cause of all this problem. I think the government is the only one that can solve this problem. First, by giving this poor people a good and worthy education, because is one immediate solution they can provide. Then, in my opinion, they should give them (when they become adults) a good job, so this will keep them doing things and will not give opportunity to get in drugs. And also, provide them a psychological help to go beat their trauma.

  17. Well, the destiny was a really important theme in the movie, because the caste system says that if you born in a slum you are destined to be a super poor guy, without chance to be someone in live, but in the movie, we see that Jamal Malik goes again that law and finish being someone. But the money wasn’t the most important thing in his destiny, the most important thing was, that he finish finding Latika, they were separate for a long of time, but finally they met. Jamal goes to the Who wants to be millionaire program show, because he wants Latika to see him.
In the last scene Jamal call his brother, he didn’t know that his brother (Salim) gave his phone to Latika, and Jamal use the last lifeguard, “called a friend”, he called his brother, but Latika answered. There we can see that the destiny play a huge roll.

We can see that in Mumbai there is a lot of poverty, like in Lima, there are a lot of slums, traffic, and terrorism. We can see that Salim (the brother of Jamal) became a gangster. The lack of work is an important thing in this two countries. The poor people do bad things to earn some money. The government must take action in this situation.

In one pivotal scene, the show’s host tells Jamal his own story about coming from the slums. He then gives Jamal the wrong answer written on the mirror in the rest room. Why did he give Jamal the wrong answer? What did Jamal do?

In India there is a piramide wich explain the 5 categories of a person based on their money and job, In the movie as much as in real life this actually occurs, so marked, so strong that we do not even see what happen to people who are below us, or do you see in the news that a slumdog found a new cure to the diabetes and actually he really founded, no we dont see that, And what only is attracted to the media is when a person gives to a charity a good quantity of money. People who are from a lower social leve are nglected by usl, we dont want to talk to them. You wonder why? But the answer is easy, and that person from a lower level have nothing that it is important to me, not the information I want, is not going to be my friend because it is simply a lower level than me, have no education, he doesn`t know important people, he dont have a job, and speak to them, all you get is wasting your time.
With the host of the game is given the same situation, Imagine what you would feel if someone that never have education and he live without electricity and water, and probably the only thing he have done in his life to survive is to steal, Why should be wining a game that is not fit to his class, perhaps you have to put it becuase i would be racist if you dont let the chance to participate, but is about to win a 5 million and incompetence guy? What?! i would give him the wrong answer and finish with my anger that i have inside.
Jamal intelligent knows how the people behave to the “Untouchables” , his social class, and he dont believe in him, and give him the opposite answer, and win.

As we know a slum is ver poor neighborhood, their characteristics are that they dont have electricity, water and almost no food and the worst is that his houses have no roof and are made with cardboard. In lima the situation is the same as the slums from the movies, wildness in all parts, and nobody cares about them, what actually happened to Salim and Jamal are probably still happen to a guy in Peru from a slum, maybe he lose his mother, maybe he is manipulated by adults, ormaybe right now is runnig and stealing to save his life.
For me the causes of this phenomena is that the people have no resources to bring their lifes ahead, they have no education and thats why they dont have money, they dont know anything about maths or fry chips, another thing is that most of that people are drug addicts, and consumes his intelligence.
To help this problem, the goverment should bring the kids from the slums education, and that would bring the person education in every aspect, supporting them to get ahead and face the future well.
Then what is wrong from the goverment is that they think that giving food and water and elctricity would stop the phenomena of the big massive poblation of slums, but they are wrong, actually giving that to the people, would make us believe that everything rain from the clouds, because if you have everything that is essencial to live and is free why i have to do, work? I dont think so.
So the goverment should give him that by short periods, then move out the masssive poblation by gropus to a new zone, giving her apartaments and then they would pay for them, and the electricity and essencal things with the work that they would have with the education freee that is given to them.

“Who Wants to be a Millionaire?” adapted in the Indian culture. Is this a sign of progress? Why or why not?
What is this film staying about the effect of money on culture?

The film tries to show through media that people can obtain a prize for the knowledge they have. This is a sign of progress because it gives the opportunity to people who have knowledge to form part of the contest to obtain a prize for it. Apart it is a form of entertainment. Even though this program is not commonly transmitted in all countries in the world is a great effort to show that if you have knowledge of something it worth a prize. If India is presenting this show it indicates a signal of progress as the developed and industrialized countries in the world.

Social, political and economic exclusion and
    Isolation due to poverty
How this problem began, is simple when the people doesn’t treat the other with dignity and respect, insult or thinking that they doesn’t have nothing at all, start when the people just want to see his own perspective of the live instead of turn around and see that maybe the world its not so great it have a great problem and that exclusion which no one should suffer.
In the movie slumdog millionaire first the social exclusion in were a country is divided in two the first of the rich people with no problem, but doesn’t accept the reality of his own country that is the misery in were people doesn’t have education like is said in this movie, then we can see economic isolation on the ways of survive of the people like stealing or in the case of Jamal and salim selling fake tours to the taj mahal and finally the political exclusion, if we see the show who wants to be a millionaire the presenter is a rich and famous person and people from the slums are used like slaves in case of latika exploited by a person who wants to sell her because she were virgin
its no so different to Peru a country were every child who disserves education and doesn’t have it is been forced to work even he don’t want to, then we can see political when we don’t respect other Peruvians just because they doesn’t speak like us or wear like us is exclusion of the greatest of been Peruvian and finally social we can see of this in whole world were Peru is just open for lima and their peoples don’t know another city, lima is a city which is open of problem like robbing, violence and drugs that we can see.
Finally to make better the city and evoid this problem we should work together been helpful with who need us, we should make better goverments because this people is that help us, we should open our mind and see that this a big problem in our country and for grow we should work as a team.

Slums in the movie were huge and they were like in a surface. Slums in Lima are mostly located in a hill and they have public lighting instead, slums in the movie didn’t. Besides environmental, health and social conditions the main causes of slums in the cities are people having more children than they can afford to, then child labour which relates a lot with the first reason and if the children have to work they can’t have a good quality education which makes them uneducated and when they grow up they have more children than they can afford to and the hole cycle starts over.

I think that the government should take care about the organization of the slums, offer employment opportunities and provide basic human resources like clean water, food, better lighting, sanitarity and infrastructure.

The government should provide condomms or another source of preservatives so the people in the slums can have sexual intercourse without having to many children and so they learn to be more responsible with their lives because most parents abandon their homes after a while.

In the final scene, we see Salim and the choice he makes – filling the bathtub with money, etc. Why does he make this choice?

Salim takes that decision seeking for redemption for having once made his brother’s life miserable. He took everything his brother wanted and also abandoned him. By scarifying himself to safe Latika he is saving the last thing in this world that Jamal loves. He sealed his destiny when he gave his phone to Latika, he knew Jamal will call to that number and that Jamed will hear Latika on the television and seek for him, but that way Salim will be able to kill Jamed.

Indian and Lima slums are not so different since both are poor and are located outside the city. The first difference is just that the Indian slum is located in a flat surface while here most slums are in the sides of the mountains and for that people who live there have to come up and down every day just to work. That aspect which do not seem to important actually affects the amount energy that people spent ant working and with more energy spent, more food they need, the surprising thing is that despite that the need for food is bigger here, there are less children starving (perhaps it’s simply that there is less people living here). Another important difference between both slums is that while Indian slums are in a constant religion war, here religions are not so varied and this negates the possibilities of having these conflicts. Having no internal wars doesn’t mean that local slums are safe. Child trafficking and drugs are still a menace to which such poor people, most times forgotten by law and police, have no defense at all. It is sad that the things in common are the most terrible aspects of their live because this simply means that there is more people in the world living in this inhuman state.

I think that the title is obviously contradictory because a slum dog is normally poor, without money; but in the title it sais that this slum dog is millionaire, a thing that it’s hard to believe. I think that the producers give this name to the movie to attract the attention of the people because is strange. The title in this movie give us a clear idea of what the story or movie will be about, when you read it you instantly know that it will be about a slum dog that became millionaire. For example when I first saw the title of the movie I imagine that it will be a slum dog that wins a kind of lottery or something like that, so in this case the title gives you a very close idea of the movie. So the contrast between a slum dog and a millionaire is shocking because it is the completely opposite thing so it causes confusion and makes you want to see why the movie is called like that.

Here in Peru, is the same situation, the slumdogs can choose between honest way, such as Jamal or bad way, like Salim. Most people choose the wrong way, because it is the easiest and also because they have no choice, because they have no education. The only way that, this can change is giving them education and a place to live in peace and not being exposed to violence.

The question taht I will answer is In the final scene, we see Salim and the choice he makes – filling the bathtub with money, etc. Why does he make this choice?
Because he sacrificed himself to Jamal and Talika, live happy and together forever. Investigating some websites, I found that the money is a message that Salim wants to tell us. It is that the money is blood money, like the money that he earned with working for Javed and because all the murders and robberies. In addition, we can say that Salim wanted to stop working with the Indian mob, but didn’t know how, so the only option was to sacrifice himself.

    Second:
I’m going to compare the slums in Munbai, and the slums in Lima. Well, live in the slums of Mumbai, is very hard because there is a lot of garbage and a lot of dead animal, etc and this make that all the people who live there, suffer illnes or even death. Secondly, the life in the slums of Lima is very hard too, but it isn’t with a lot of garbage or some dead animals, but they have a lot of difficulties too, like the economy problems or health problems, etc. I think that the causes of this phenomena are: that the people who live in the slums, don’t want to prgress or work in a place, to earn some money. I also think that what we have to do with this problem, is go to that place and make a social work, to help them with some food or cleaning supplies. The last think is that we can’t solve this problem because we have no power in the country, but the person who can solve this problem is the president, like he is right now but he started in the other parts of Peru and then he is going to pass to Lima and he will solve problem.

I believe that this movie has many important messages, but the one that I find to be more relevant is “nothing is impossible.” This message is revealed all throughout the film, since the moment when Jamal was a kid until the moment when he won 20 million rupees. No one would ever think that a “slum-dog” could end up winning that much money, and even less that he will earn it in Who Wants to be a Millionaire? I think that what he did was incredible, because he knew all the answers from past experiences, and not “good” experiences. If Jamal Malik, a slum-dog can become a millionaire, then pretty much nothing in this world is impossible.

    Mumbai and Lima:
After watching the film I was shocked by the similarities of the slums in Mumbai and the ones that we have here in Peru. The people who live in the slums do not live in houses, they live in shacks, not houses. Another thing was that they did not have roads made of concrete, just dirt. Poor people live in slums, and slums are no place to live, so to solve this problem, we need to end poverty, not only in Lima or Mumbai, in the world. I believe that what causes poverty is the lack of responsibility of their parents, who are not in a good situation, and use their children to earn more money. To solve this problem I think that money is not all that is needed, they need education, because if they are well educated, they will get a good job and raise their children in a good environment, not a slum. Most of the times we have money and do not know what to do with it, and the best thing to do is use to help others. We have been blessed to bless, and this is what we have to do. Slums are all over the world, and we have to do everything possible to stop poverty, and if a slum-dog can win 20 million rupees in Who Wants to be a Millionaire?, then we can stop poverty in the world, and make a good change, we have, to make a change.

What does the title mean? How does the title and the contrast within it provide symbolic summary of the film?

The title Means like two different words that don`t means anything together because slum mean like poor people and millionaire like a very rick people.
The title and the contrast in this movie means how a poor man pass to be rich with a simple TV program, Slum means like a very poor zone and is like a young population that don`t have a lot of money, so I think that went the title talk about slum is about Jamal, how with a simple TV program “Who wants to be a millionaire” and in one night or one day he turn to be a millionaire.

The comparison between Lima Slums To Mumbai slums are that, the problems of poverty are not reviewed by the politics and it is a problem that Is not only on Lima and Mumbai, is in all the world, near the school there is a popular slum, they name of that slum is Manchay, is a place that people don’t have enough money to build their houses and don’t have money for eat all days, they need helps from the people who have money, in Mumbai happened the same thing,, Mumbai have a large population and the government cant give money for everybody so some people need to live by his own ways, that kind of people are the sums.

In my point of view y think, that there is a solution, I think that the government give more opportunities for the people who have small business, the government need to give money so they can grow his own business, but before that I think that the government need to give a few classes for teach that people how to keep the money safe and how you need to do for grow your own job, so that kind of few and easy examples can do the government for keep a population without slums.

In the film, the theme of destiny is a central theme. What
does it mean that all Jamal desires is just out of his reach?

It means that, because Jamal is poor/slum he has less benefits than the normal people. In other words, he was born poor and he will stay poor. But in the film, Jamal is a lucky slum (by destiny), because of his poorness he knew the answers to those questions on the Tv program, that is what makes him rich…his life in the slums and destiny.

The movie is trying to say that we make our own future, nothing is written in our minds, we can change our future.

Slums in Lima and slums in Mumbai:
There are a lot of slums in both cities, but Mumbai has the highest population of slums in a small territory. In my opinion, both of cities are suffering this problems. The solution to this problem is to organise the place where they are living, clean the area to avoid dissease. Second provide them jobs, food, etc.

What are the causes of this phenomena?

This phenoma is caused because the parents doesn’t gave enough education to the children, that’s where I think the problem start. First, if the children were well educated the wouldn’t have the mentality to steal thing for survive, they will look for a job to earn money and keep studing to get a better job and have a good life.

In Perú, if we go to the poorest places in Lima, we would find the same we have seen in the movie Slumdog Millionaire. In Lima also we didn’t have gave a good formation to the poor children, that is why the poor children steal things. The goverment might have to do something, like starting to give education to his children so they will have another mentality and they wouldn’t steal, they would look for a job.
Also, we have this problem of a lot of percentage of poor people because we hace persons that are extremly rich and others that are extreamly poor, so is not balanced.

In the final scene, we see Salim and the choice he makes – filling the bathtub with money, etc. Why does he make this choice?

Salim makes the choice of putting all the money of Javed in the bathtub and then get into the bathtub him too, to shoot and kill Javed because he knowed that if Javed was dead he will no longer search for Latika or Jamal so they could be free. He decided to do something for his brother becouse around the entire movie he didn’t do anything for his brother. He just bother him, by taking away his girl and locked him in the bathroom so he couldn’t get the signature of his favorite actor.

This decissions are alson taken by people in Lima, for example poor people have to take a decission between robbing or work really hardly for their money, people who are honorable choose to make their money by their own effort, like Salim who decided at the end of the movie to be honorable and fair to Jamal.

    • In the final scene, we see Salim and the choice he makes – filling the bathtub with money, etc. Why does he make this choice?

He fills the bathtub, because he knows that his boss will kill him, as he let go of Latika, which was one of his girls, and had practically a slave. Salim have an opportunity in his life to do something good, because for all his life he had thought himself alone,as a child he has a more open mind towards to the bad side, and he wanted the money to survives, but get it the wrong way, even pleased himself throwing his brother, to have relations with Latika, knowing that Jamal love Latika.

This opportunity that he has to do a good thing, to not think himself and thinks in his brother that suffered at her side so small,. Salim knew that if he answered the last question, Jamal would become a millionaire, but in the good way, he knew that if he take free Latika sending to his brother, he will be happy, because Jamal will be with Latika.

By doing this act of kindness, knowing that he will be killed, he fill the bathtub and put money into it, to die with everything he got, but in a bad way. Finally, he says God is great, as it gave the opportunity to get rid of that weight off.

As can be seen in the film Slumdog Millionaire, Mumbai poverty is almost equal to that of Lima, and survives the most cunning, as you have to know how to survive on the streets, where no one is trustworthy, stealing food, lying people and so on.

As can be seen in the film Slumdog Millionaire, Mumbai poverty is almost equal to that of Lima, and surviving the most cunning, as you have to know how to survive on the streets, where no one is trustworthy, stealing food, lying people and so on.

It is very difficult to survive in this type of problem because they do not have much money to eat, always have to be attached to someone, because you can be in the cap to survive. But as we saw, that’s not true, since it lies to his brother Salim, thought it would be very reliable, but Salim threw Jamal and only thinking about himself.

This can be stopped, giving more work, so the people can work and have more money. Putting to study small childrens without families, or doing publics schools to this childrens, so that from small can read, add, so on, because knowing this, they can work when they grow and working they would have money to eat and not stole, because children are the future of a country.

What does the title mean? How does the title and the contrast within it provide symbolic summary of the film?
Slum means the place where extremely people live. They live with houses of a very bad material like cardboard. Millionaire, all we know what it means so I don´t have to say. The two words that we can see in the title are totally different for one reason slum is where poor people live and millionaire are rich people that is the contrast of the title. The title no provide the entire summary but if you analysis the title you can deduce that the theme of the movie is that a person who live in a slum is going to become a millionaire.

The slum that is where poor people live are in around the world but Peru is one who have the most biggest slum in the world, more in Brazil and more in India who is one the countries with more population. The differences between ours slum with the Mumbai slums that ours are bigger and they are in a lot of parts in Mumbai they are a lots too but the difference that are smaller than ours.
This phenomenon appears because the government don´t care about poor people then say that they care about but that’s a lie. They only keep that the poor people increase and they don´t care because they want to negotiate with companies for get more money. For this problem is impossible to be do in a short term because the problem is so bigger that is need to be do in a lot of years. The solution for this problem in my opinion is an no military communism a person who is from the communism but don’t for do war have a power , we need a person of the good communism someone who care about that people and be soliday with them and give it a can of house like a slum but of solid material where they can live and don´t contract persons that do the work when they have a education give it the opportunity to them. QUESTION: This film weaves together nightmare and impossible dream. What do you take away as the most important or impression from the film?

The movie has many messages, but the one I think is the most important, is “never lose the hope, because all is possible in this live”. We can see this it, in most of the movie, especially in the moments were the principal characters, are in the most difficult moments, like being captured by child exploiters, lose your best friend with the possibility of never see again her again or see how your mother is killed and from that moment you are alone in the world. Jamal Malik, face to this situations, demonstrate his disposition of never lose the hope, and never get up. And with this attitude, he won the love of the girl of his dreams and won something that seems impossible for a “slum-dog”, won 20 million rupees in the famous game “Who wants to be a millionaire”.

CONTRAST BETWEEN LIMA AND MUMBAI SLUMS:

As we see in the movie most of the city of Mumbai is pure slums, but this place isn’t the only one who is full of them, Lima is also one. Some of the things that characterize these two types of slums are the very poor of conditions of live, the houses made of poor materials, like straw, the people that do not even have a home and the poor materials of what are made the roads. I think that the causes of this problem is that the bad organization of the states, because many people are indifferent about these problems, and also another factor is the overpopulation, because with this problem the state needs more food and more places of work, and this bring us again to the other point that is the bad organization of the state, the bad distribution of the lands and the necessity of more food. This is a critical situation, that is really affecting the conditions of live of this slums, but I think that if we unit us as a state, leave the indifference, we can solution this problem and all the others. There are many solutions that we can put in practice like never throw to the rubbish the food, instead we can approach them giving it to the persons that really need them, the slums. And also to improve their conditions of live, we can do the possible donate things, or search for works they can realize, or giving them moral support, making them smile.

For my it is ethic the decision that make Salim of kill Maman because this 2 reasons the first one is that if he don’t kill Maman , Maman is going to take advantage of the poor kids and the second is that if Salim didn’t kill Maman when Maman get the opportunity he will kill all of them. But the most important thing is that for the Christians it is ethic to kill someone if killing him you are saving a lot of live.
1 explication: Maman uses the poor kids all the time. He teach to the kids a song and the kids need to go to the street and recollect money and then the money is going to Maman but the thing that is worst is that Maman hurt the kids because if one kid don’t is blind you are going to give him money because you are going to feel bad.
2 explication: if Salim didn’t kill Maman and take the money and run with Lakita in few days Maman is going to find them and kill all of them.

The differences between Lima and Munbay they are a lot but I am going to explain you only 2 the first one is the people that live in each city Mumbay have 21 255 000 million people an Lima 8,5 million the second difference is that in lima we don’t have cast system and in Munbay they have this system . Well slums in lima aren’t too different from India, I think it’s the same only that here there aren’t a lot of slums in lima because the population in lima I think is around 8 or 9 million people but in this city Mumbai there are 20.5 million of people. So there are much more slums in India than in all South America. Why there are slums I think is because how we men have been changing the world I think that this phenomenon starts in the industrial revolution. Because when this happen a lot of people star losing their jobs so they have to live on this really poor places that’s why I think the industrial revolution start and know you need to have a good education and this people can’t get this so that’s why most of them stay poor until they died. Well in short term I think that we have to do as we are doing now giving them food clothes for example there are a lot of charities now on this day’s that help poor people in their own way some of them are schools others are for example houses were people can stay etc. and in long term I think that we need to make our country grow so there are going to be more job opportunities and also the banks are helping them by giving them money to run out a business and also upgraded the nationals schools so these people can have a good education and maybe enter to universities if they study hard enough so if we do this in a few years we are going to see less poor children on the streets asking for money.

In the question: In the film, the theme of destiny is a central theme. What does it mean that all Jamal desires is just out of his reach?

It means that Jamal was born in a slumdog family and he was poor, and by consecuence, the people of this same economic situation, had difficulties to get this type of beneficts because of racism, fear, etc. but that doesn’t mean that is imposible, and one proof that proves that nothing is imposible is the victory of jamal in the program “who wants to be a millonaire”. Here in lima happens something similar. there lots of slums and poor people who lives there and they study in schools of poor learning. but since this year there’s a program called “El Ultimo Pasajero” (the last passenger) and this game consist in the competition for 3 schools, each representing a team from a random color (Red, Green or Blue), which compete between to win a vacation trip. and every school of every place can participate (f course the ones who participate are people from 5th secondary). In Lima there lots of slums which are here because there lots of people who had a bad economic situation and they doesn’t have too much money to keep a “normal house” so they built their on house with recycled objects in places were they are the same type of houses, and this everyday is getting bigger and bigger. what we can do is to give to this people work and inprove the education in the public schools, because the future of our country begin in the schools. our school is a very good school, but these type of schools (the private ones) are from rich and normal people who had a normal home, the ones who live in slums are the ones who study in the public schools and we have to inprove the education in the public schools. because if we do that, the children who had born in slums will get more oportunities of work and they will get a better payement. which means that they family won’t pass through the same way as he has do it.

We know that in Lima there are also slums as in India. Places where people kill for some money and crime is history of everyday. The differences are that in India there are confrontations because of the different religions that fight each other, in Peru they fight because of the differences between soccer teams. Also the slums are not as big as in India. That is because the population. Another difference is that in Peru there is no way to die of hungry. That is a big difference, because here if you don´t have what to eat yo simply take a fruit from a tree or kill an animal and eat it.

This is caused because there is too much people and no too much jobs. The state doesn´t care about these people and they condition. They don’t have the education and the material to keep forward and get away from their situation.

I believe that the solution is to give a good education to these children in the slums. Teach them how to get out of that situation, working and changing the situation. Also they must learn to keep their family and not abuse of the number of kids they have. By the short term, we must provide them with jobs and education and in the long term, give them water and electricity and help them to build a good house. Give them chances to move on.

Greed, corruption and the misuse of power are highlighted in the film through a variety of characters. How are those who have money and power glamorized in this film? What happens to the victims? The tv Host of the progamme ¨who wants to be a millionaire´is a famous guy who won that game and its rich. Gmal is a slum who entered to that show to be seen by Latika and to try to win this game. The tv host accuse Gamal of cheating because Gamal was answering all the questions, and because he is a slum he suppoused to be a cheater and not fair, just because he is a slum.

In Lima we have some shows with the same finality, win a prize. In this case im going to talk about the famous show called Ël último pasajero¨. In this programme the finality is to win a trip for any school for his prom trip. The tv host on this show is not fair with the school with less reputation or less money, so he give to them hard questions and he dont treat them well. Also anonymus partners say that he is really strict with these kind of schools, that want to win a chance of a free trip.

In the final scene, we see Salim and the choice he makes – filling the bathtub with money, etc. Why does he make this choice?

He makes this choice because he realizes that he has done a lot of damage to his brother and he wants to fix it sacrificing himself and killing all the men that were entering the room and then dying. Also, he starts thinking that he has taken the corrupt way to survive and get money and he has passed through all the vices. In change, his brother has taken a different live with more order and responsibility. Salim also thinks about the relationship that Jamal was having with Latika and reflects that with this sacrifice Latika will not have any problems in her work because of his dead boss. This happens because he knows that with that sacrifice Jamal will have a better live with Latika and he wanted to fix his mistakes committed before. For me, this action is really good for Salim and lives his conscience and soul more free and in a better condition.

In Peru, there is a very notable difference between the number of rich and poor people, that causes lots of society problems like for example discrimination between the different social classes. This kind of difference is also seen in the movie Slumdog Millionaire, and it causes serious conflicts like corruption, physical abuse, social discrimination, and others. This kind of conflicts are the cause of other like working children, malnutrition, crimes, illiterate people, unemployment, and some others. Lots of kids don’t have even a basic education and they are becoming people with almost no possibilities of getting a job and working. They see they need of surviving and start to work in streets to give some little thing to their families. This is also seen in the movie, because in the slums there isn’t any consistent education and the children also grow without a knowledge base.
If think that the solution for this big problem here in Peru and probably in Mumbai also is the reorganization of the government. This is because the government doesn´t know how to manage the money and lots of politicians steal it as the corruption increases in the country. The government has another problem because they mostly spend the money for useless things like buying too much arms because they are “preparing the country for a possible war”. This is ridiculous because there isn’t going to start any war in Peru. They are focusing on meaningless things like paying more politicians to complete all the political parties when they don’t realize that most part of the country needs urgent economical and moral help.

What does the title mean? How does the title and the contrasts within it provide symbolic summary of the film?

As everyone knows, the title of this film is “Slumdog Millionaire”, a phrase conformed by totally different words. A slumdog is a poor man with almost no opportunities to progress, so he/she can’t be rich. So, what we can realize when we see this title for the first time is that the movie is about a slumdog who, by luck, became millionaire. This means exactly what the film is about. A poor man, called Jamal, who was a slumdog in his younger life, luckily enters to the show “Who Wants to be a Millionaire” and, by answering all the correct answers, won a million rupees.

What the title doesn’t explain is how exactly he answered the show’s hard questions. And this explanation is the biggest part in the movie. He did it because the questions were about important moments in his life. Actually, his poverty made him rich; it’s pretty ironic. He was very lucky.

Comparison between Lima slums and Mumbai slums

Poverty is a terrible state in which one doesn’t have money or material possessions. A poor person can’t satisfy his basic needs like eating, having a good hygiene, etc. This people usually live on the streets or in slums. In Lima, near the school and near my house there is a slum called Manchay, where people don’t have money to make houses. They do have houses, but these houses can’t be really called like such. In the movie the slums are very similar to the ones in Lima.

I really think that the cause of this is bad education and lack of opportunities. The government and a lot of people give these people financial support, but this is useless as they will use it until it runs out and they will never progress. The government should do something, like establishing more public schools and giving more jobs, but they are indifferent about this terrible crisis in the country. But even with schools, children don’t assist to them because they are working to get something to eat for their family.

The bad education gives them a small idea of what moral is. This lack of values is what becomes in worse things like illegal work, frauds, gangs, stealing, etc.

If the government doesn’t help, then we got to do something. This is not happening only in Lima and Mumbai, it has actually been developing all around the world. We should make people realize that these people are also human beings and we should help them. We should raise funds to bring education to little kids, so in the future they could get out of the poverty circle.

In the final scene, we see Salim and the choice he makes – filling the bathtub with money, etc. Why does he make this choice?
He makes that choice because he finally realizes and regrets what he’d done. He put a whole space between Latika and his brother, he made his brother suffer and did anything in order to get money and get out of the slums. He had everything but at the same time he had nothing. He had everything he had ever wanted but he didn’t have anyone at his side to share with. He couldn’t do anything to change it except for one thing. Since his brother had gone so far at “Who wants to be a millionare?” TV show just for Latika, the only thing he could do was letting Latika and his brother to be together. And the only way to let that happen was to release Latika from the gangster who he worked with. He didn’t deny his wish of money so he filled the bathtub with money and died there along with the gangster.

Comparing Lima’s slums with Munbai’s slums
What are the causes of this phenomena? What do you think should be done about this problem? How can we solve this problem in the short term? Long-term?
Common Facts about Mumbai and Lima
    • The city Mumbai is one of the largest cities in India. The city of Lima is the capital of Peru therefore; the lure of jobs in the city is a huge pull on those living in rural areas.
    • Migration into the city continues to grow at exponential rates each year. As a result, there has been a disproportionate rise of slums and overcrowing in the city.
In my oponion, the cause of this phenomena is the migration. Poor people migrate to well-known cities in their countries in order to have the same opportunities as the ones who already live there and have a job. But they face a lot of problems because if they want a job first they need a house. They are in most of the cases poor so they can just build a little hut. After getting a small hut, they need to find for a job but they won’t get a job because of their lack of knowledge and that’s also the way which makes crime increase. If they want to sell something in order to avoid stealing, they would need a small place to put the stuff; otherwise, they wouldn’t sell too many things. They would have to buy or transport more things to sell so it’s not convenient for them. And that’s how finally slums are created because of migration. We could avoid that by creating a project where people from other cities feel comfortable with what they have rather than expecting a better life in the well-known city. In order to make people more confortable the government should provide, in any possible way, more jobs so people can earn money without stealing it. All those projects would be able to decrease slums in a long-term because of the gathering of money for supporting those projects and the way that people would take it.
